The Cheshire Fire Department and the Cheshire Town Council are pleased to announce and recognize the winners of the "Fire Prevention-Everyone/Everyday" Safety Poster Contest.

The winner from Highland School is Aishwarya Benzy (4th Grade)

The winner from Doolittle School is Madison Schiavi (5th Grade)

The winners were formally recognized at the March 12, 2013 meeting of the Cheshire Town Council.

Participants in this contest are 4th and 5th grade students from Cheshire Public Schools and the St. Bridget School. The contest is intended to develop fire safety awareness in children so that they can contribute to promoting fire prevention for everyone in their family everyday.

The Connecticut Association of Schools approved the contest as it helps to develop fire safety awareness in youngsters. Unfortunately in this day and age, fire continues to be a leading cause of death and injury in the United States. Hopefully, through fire prevention education, most of these fires can be prevented. Children are the most likely to learn and retain the fire safety message. As a result, they are a valuable link in the chain of communication by taking the contest message home and promoting fire prevention measures to the family.

The 2011 contest reached many families as approximately 30,000 students from more than 130 communities participated in the contest.
